James Spano is a veteran solar developer- having developed over 85 MW- and a Managing Partner of Spano Partners Holdings, LLC. Jim’s strong financial background, as well as expertise in real estate and land development, has given him a perspective that is unique among solar energy developers.
Jim is the founder and President of the New Jersey Solar Grid Supply Association (NJSGSA), an organization of investors, developers, engineers, energy professionals and public supporters dedicated to improving New Jersey’s energy program. The Association represents the majority of grid-connected, utility-scale solar generation facilities in New Jersey. Jim is also a Director of the Mid-Atlantic Solar Energy Industries Association (MSEIA). In addition, Jim is an active member of the Intersolar North America Industry Committee. Jim is also on the Industry Board of Intersolar USA, a Board Member of IBESA, the Board of the NJ PACE Coalition and has spoken at numerous Conferences and Summits across the USA.
“You can say I’m an entrepreneur by birth,” says Jim. “I enjoy identifying project opportunities and then putting teams together to take a project from concept to completion.” In the Spano family businesses, Jim takes a lead role in real estate development and has responsibility for all project finance. In addition, Jim has nearly 30 years of experience in managing financial planning and insurance brokerages. He has retained his credentials as an expert in the insurance, finance, and solar industries and has provided expert testimony in dozens of civil lawsuits in all three sectors.
Through Jim’s leadership, Spano Solar Enterprises, the solar development arm of Spano Partners, is now recognized as one of the top privately-owned utility-scale alternative energy developers in New Jersey and as a leader in the Distributed Generation Rooftop Solar Industry. Jim is often called upon as an expert voice to represent the industry in both legal proceedings as well as regulatory and legislative issues. He was recently retained as a lead expert in the largest solar lawsuit in the Northeast, having represented the successful plaintiff in obtaining a $109 million judgment.
Although Jim is a savvy business leader and staunch solar advocate, he says, “I’m a philanthropist at heart.” Jim is a founding member and first president of the Hillsborough Kiwanis Club, Trustee of Community Options, the fourth largest non profit in NJ advocating for people with disabilities, and former Director of The Cerebral Palsy Association of New Jersey. In addition, he is an Officer on the Board of the Spano Family Foundation, a 501c that supports charities in the U.S., Africa and Haiti. Among his projects was a $250,000 solar shipment to a hospital in Haiti, which now has the energy it needs to care for a quarter million remote villagers.
Joseph Spano comes from an accounting background by professional designation having earned a Bachelor’s degree at Rider University and subsequently achieving the distinction of becoming a Certified Public Accountant in 1979 as an auditor with Price Waterhouse.
In 1981, Joe joined the family’s fashion accessory business converting it from a distribution business to a design and development business. Having grown it exponentially, he ultimately sold the company in 2005 to a consortium of private equity firms. He also joined the family real estate business in 2000 and is currently a Managing Director with responsibility for strategic direction and oversight of all aspects of the business with a focus on the larger local projects.
Mr. Spano’s strong accounting background and extensive experience as CEO of one of the largest companies in its industry has provided Mr. Spano with the skills and insight to “look around the corner” and his judgment permeates every major decision of the business. Aside from his business ventures, Joe is a founding member of The Spano Family Charitable Foundation, an EMT with Freehold First Aid and Rescue Squad, an honorary board member of the Veterans of the Vietnam War and Veterans Coalition, and active member of several other professional and civic organizations supporting our veterans and the disadvantaged both here at home and in southern Africa, as well as displaced Christians of the Middle East war.
Chief Financial Officer
Our Chief Financial Officer, Tony brings to Spano Partners over 30 years of financial expertise developed with premier Fortune-sized companies such as General Electric and Merck as well as in small, entrepreneurial environments. Tony holds a MBA in Finance from the Wharton Graduate Division of the University of Pennsylvania and a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from Lafayette College, in addition to being a Certified Management Accountant.
Tom Gleckner comes to the organization with a degree in management from the University of Scranton. His work history includes 18 years in the tire industry managing 500,000 sq. ft. facility. Having joined the Spano Family businesses in 2000, his management and personnel skills have contributed to the growth and stability of the organization. His transition into the Real Estate business has resulted in the creation of the Property Management Division responsible for all corporate real estate assets. Currently Tom has primary responsibility for all land use and property management responsibilities of the company.
Tom Spano also comes from an accounting background having earned a Bachelor’s degree from Penn State in accounting. Tom then worked briefly in the corporate accounting field before joining the family import and distribution business early in his career where he supervised the distribution department where he was responsible for as many as 40 employees in his department. Tom Spano has since transitioned into the Chief Technology Officer role of the company providing management with the tools and technology to efficiently manage all aspects of the business. His experience as a staff manager for the family business has given him the skills and temperament to maintain a strong and adhesive group management style that has grown closer and stronger through his judgment, trust, and insight, all of which has enabled quick and effective resolution when necessary. He has become an adept mediator and proactively addresses and resolves issues prior to becoming impairments to the proper functioning of the business.
Senior Vice President of Sales
Jared Haines is an experienced executive in the Solar Energy Industry. Prior to joining Spano Partners as Sr VP of Sales, Mr. Haines worked as the Head of Origination with NextEra Energy for NextEra’s Solar Energy Distributed Generation team. Mr. Haines helped develop the team on the East Coast, while growing the pipeline and revenue by more than 450% within two years. Mr. Haines was influential in creating custom solutions for commercial and industrial customers, municipal electric companies, and COOPs, as well as for large investor-owned utilities.
Prior to NextEra, Jared Haines was the Chief Revenue Officer for RGS Energy’s commercial division in 2014. RGS Energy, founded in 1978, is one of the oldest solar companies in the United States. Mr. Haines ran the commercial division for RGS Energy and his team sells solar solutions across the county with people in over 18 States. With his background and experience, he has proven to help guide many business owners and corporate management teams toward making the right investment in solar energy.
Jared Haines was President of Mercury Solar Systems, Inc., a company he co-founded in 2006, for more than eight years. He oversaw several business units including sales, marketing, and business development and was actively involved in the expansion of the business. Mr. Haines was integral in helping Mercury Solar Systems secure funding from Oppenheimer’s private equity and special investments division in 2008 and had played an active role in several acquisitions to help the company expand its footprint in the U.S.
Prior to co-founding Mercury Solar Systems, Mr. Haines led an impressive 15-year sales and marketing career working most recently at British Telecom, the largest communications service provider in the United Kingdom. He previously served as President of Strategis, a start-up technology company he sold to a French-based software company in 2001.
Mr. Haines has a B.S. in Social Psychology from Tufts University. He is an active speaker on solar energy at various investment conferences, industry tradeshows, schools, and other public events and is frequently quoted in the national, local, and business press as an industry expert.
Executive Assistant to Jim Spano
Karen Colyer has extensive experience in Sales, Marketing, Administration/Management, and Communications. She has numerous strengths including leadership, organization skills, written and verbal communications, creation and production of online and print marketing creatives. She has conducted trainings, negotiated contracts, and has worked with a wide range of specialists including engineers, contractors, building officials, along with others.
She has worked in various real estate positions leveraging her skills in marketing and administration. Karen is an entrepreneur at heart and has created companies both in the real estate industries along with website development and graphic design. Her diversity of skills makes her a great fit for Spano Partners and the different businesses that the company is invested in.
Peter Voorhees came to Spano Partners in 2015 with a scientific background, having studied Biology at the State University of New York at Cortland. After interning with Spano Partners for 3 months, Peter joined the team full time in the fall of 2015. Leveraging this formal analytical training Peter prepares financial models for Spano Partners’ renewable energy deal flow as well as maintains and administrates each project specific data room. In addition to these day-to- day analytics, Peter has successfully prepared and organized many events, seminars, fundraisers, and several nationally renown speaking engagements for Managing Partner, James Spano.
